The value of an Australian opal is determined by the interplay of various characteristics: play-of-color, brightness, pattern, body tone, shape, and the quality of the cut and polish.
Particularly valued are intense play-of-color, rare colors and patterns, as well as opals whose colors are visible across the entire surface. Dark body tones can further enhance the play-of-color.
Since every opal is unique, its value cannot be determined solely by its carat weight.
